Easy as pie at St. Joe's!

STANDISH, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- The kitchen at Saint Joseph's College in Standish was really cooking Wednesday afternoon!

About 50 volunteers pitched in to bake 182 apple pies in 3 hours. The school's food service, Bon Appetit, started the bake-off last year to benefit Catherine's Cupboard Food Pantry. Each of the pies goes into a Thanksgiving basket for clients.

Food pantry coordinator Amy Russell says it's really heartening seeing so many community members taking part this year. Russell says, "I'm so excited. Last year, we had a lot of staff and faculty. This year, we have a lot of families. It's just really great."

Next year, the school plans to bake 1,000 pies and distribute them to multiple food pantries and shelters.
