Taiko drums.  They've been called Rolling Thunder and the Heartbeat of Japan.  They're big.  They're loud.  When Taiko Maine Drummers pick up their bachi and begin to play, the room fills with intense energy, complex rhythms, and visually dramatic dance-like movement.
Toss in a lion dance, add the masks of mischievous mountain spirits, blend in Japanese legends told by writer and storyteller Katy Rydell, and you have a lively evening of Japanese performing arts.

Taiko Maine Dojo director Elizabeth Berg trained in San Francisco with grandmaster Seiichi Tanaka.  For many years Elizabeth was a performing member of San Francisco Taiko, the oldest performing troop in the United States.  In 2006 she created Taiko Maine Dojo in Portland Maine.  For more information about Taiko Maine Dojo, contact Elizabeth Berg, eberg@maine.rr.com.

Katy Rydell has performed at storytelling venues and festivals across the United States and in Japan.  For more information about Katy, visit http://www.katyrydell.com/.
