Suspect indicted in Westbrook arsons
News

NEWS CENTER -- Twenty six year old Joseph Westcott of Westbrook has been indicted by a Cumberland County Grand Jury for a series of arsons and motor vehicle burglaries in 2005 and 2006.

Westbrook Police and Investigators from the Maine State Fire Marshal's Office investigated six motor vehicle arsons in September of 2005 and four more in February of 2006. They collected evidence, including cigarette butts and beer bottles, that contained matching, male DNA. However, forensic analysis indicated that the DNA did not match any suspect in the Combined DNA Index System (CODIS).

The case remained cold for nearly five years.

This past September, the Crime Lab identified a match from the Westbrook arsons to Wescott, whose DNA profile had been added to the database as the result of an unrelated arrest. A photograph of Wescott was also consistent with the surveillance footage of the arson suspect.
